Shutter (2004) 7/10

Shutter is scary. Really scary. There are many fright scenes, and while it touches on many asian film cliches, it distinguishes itself from the typical horror genre though its solid scripting and directing. The acting cast is so-so, and while not particularly remarkable, accquit themselves well. The fright level is high and some of the imagery is truly creepy. One thing that i did not like was how the running time felt too long. There was several moments in the movie when i though the film was going to end, only to pile on more revelations. Still, i must commend the film on an excellent denouement that really creeped me out. Hint: It has something to do with the neck pains of the male lead.

Ocean’s 12 (2004) 7/10

The second time round, it seems as if the cast and Steven Soderberg just wanna have fun. And what fun they have. Granted, it may be too wordy, and lacks the spectacular sequences of Ocean’s 11, but its self-referencing and the sense of humor of the film was great. This isn’t so much a heist flick as it is a chance for the mega-star cast to dazzle you with their star power. The script is bascially just a vehicle for the star driven cast to act cool and all, so any logic is a bonus. Parts of the film regularly defy logic, so much so that it feels more like Soderberg is trying to do a sleight of hand on the audience. Still, the self effacing humor and the sheer charisma of the cast allows the sequel to coast through.

Mr and Mrs Smith (2005) 7/10

The script is muddled and basically plain bad. The supporting cast is non-existant and largely forgettable. The directing is passable. Everything hinges on the chemistry of the leads Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. And they don’t disappoint by giving the audience sizzling chemistry. In all, its a fun rolicking ride. I felt that the ending was too abrupt, but still as a summer blockbuster, it successfully manages to entertain us all.
