Is the Wii failing to meet its potential? - Video Game Feature - Yahoo! Video Games

There are too many crappy games on the Wii.

So says the global boss of 2K Games, Christoph Hartmann, and at least in the opinion of video game critics, he’s on to something. Using figures from review aggregation site Metacritic.com, almost half of Wii games released since the console launched in 2006 have scored below 65%, compared with about a third of Xbox 360 and PS3 titles. And 65% is a pretty crappy aggregate score, considering that many game review sites rarely score below 50%.

Raise the bar to 85%, and the difference is even more pronounced: 360 owners can play twice as many games rated above 85% as Wii owners, while the PS3 nearly triples Nintendo’s numbers.

Diablo 3 and preset attributes

Ok, so there was the art controversy where players complained that D3’s graphics are too bright and cheery. I agree, and i do prefer the darker graphics but i’ll defer to the experts at Blizzard on how to make an awesome game. However, the inclusion of auto-set attributes rankles me to no end. Look, when i level up, i want POINTS to distribute for my stats, not some auto level mechanism. If i want to create a strength based wizard or a magic welding barbarian, that’s my prerogative to screw up my character. If i want to sacrifice hit points for more damage per second, that should be an option. So please Blizzard, Diablo 3 is NOT world of warcraft. Don’t screw with a winning formula.

Fallout 3 is ONLY SOMEWHAT available in Singapore!

As Cnet asia notes fallout 3 is only somewhat available in singapore.

Apparently, Fallout 3 (PC version) will only be out on Nov 13 in Singapore. The crappy versions (console) are already out, but seriously, why would you want to play F3 with a controller when you can use a mouse? Not that it matters to me because i absolutely cannot touch Fallout 3 until December. Fallout is a toxic substance that will make you fail exams, and i say that from personal experience.

Plus, those of F3 cold turkey can download the original F3 demo by Black Isle Studios here. You know, the ones who did F1 and F2.

InterPlay Announces Fallout MMO

Interplay announces Fallout MMO. Not to be confused with Fallout 3, which is developed by Bethesda. Now, i still have good memories of playing Interplay games, back when they were good. So, tentatively, i hope that the MMO will meet the standards of the original Fallout.

PS3 Preview: Fallout 3 - ComputerAndVideoGames.com

Following up the astounding Oblivion is going to be hard work for the Bethesda Softworks crew, but after getting our hands on Fallout 3 we’re convinced that the dev’s science fiction fuelled follow-up and third in the seminal series is going to blow Oblivion clear out of the water. It’s that bloody good.

Insomnia | Commentary | On role-playing games

And there was never a question of these games evolving to overcome their humble origins, as happened in the West. Western CRPGs have kept evolving because there has always existed consciousness of a direction towards which to evolve; JRPGs, meanwhile, have been going round in circles ever since their inception — Fallout is worlds away from Akalabeth; not so Rogue Galaxy from Final Fantasy.

The only kind of evolution JRPGs have undergone is of a cosmetic nature: Final Fantasy was no Ultima, and its endless sequels had to be justifed in some way — and so they were. CG or anime-style cutscenes and countless hours’ worth of voice-acting and orchestral soundtracks were the justification, piled up, stacked and shoved inside cartridges, CD-ROMs, GD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs, and soon enough Blu-ray discs and who knows what else.

And the results of this unchecked and wholly misdirected “evolution”? They can be clearly seen today simply by contrasting the kinds of questions asked by fans of Western and Japanese CRPGs on the launch of a new title. While the former are eager to know about the character creation process, non-linearity, multiple endings, and whether they can be evil, the latter seem to care little about anything besides the names of “character” designers and music composers. Market economies being what they are, everyone ends up getting what they asked for.

Underwiielming

Having tried out the wii yesterday, i remained throughly unimpressed. In addition to the dated graphics, the controls wasn’t as intuitive as one would think. Trying to play a FPS with the wiimote is the equivalent of trying to use a spastic mouse, and the gameplay experience is marred because time is wasted trying to use the controller properly.

StarCraft 2

OMG. Blizzard has decided to get off their cash cow WOW, and finally give us SC2. Not that i’m complaining. This only means one thing: After Sc2 will be Diablo 3 (probably). Yay! Finally, there is a game for me to look forward to. Every once in a while, a game is released that sets your heart aflutter and makes you really really want to upgrade your computer. SC2 is that game.

Apple still quiet on game strategy | CNET News.com

It’s been a little more than a year since Apple switched to Intel chips, a move that some hoped would let Mac users quickly get their hands on the best games. But they’re are still forced to wait for the best titles.

One of the few things that takes precedence over sleep

This may or may not mean anything, but Bethesda, who won the rights to Fallout 3 after Black Isle collapsed, has finally showed signs of actually doing something when it revealed the teaser poster for Fallout 3 @ E3 this year. Of course, it was so low profile that i didn’t notice it until one month later. Still, its better than nothing.

In an unrelated but interesting piece of Fallout trivia, there even seems to be a Fallout Card Game! No idea if its true ornot since the site is in some unknown language, but still, quite cool.

BBC NEWS | Programmes | Click | Spiritual challenge for gamers
Later this year Left Behind Games will release Eternal Forces, an action packed story set in a New York landscape where soldiers take on demons.

There’s no blood and a no cursing rule - curse and your energy level drops.

The makers hope it will be the first title to take Christian gaming mainstream.

Troy Lyndon of Left Behind Games said: “There is warfare, the Bible is full of warfare, so are all the other great games that are on the market.

“Naturally speaking we’ve got new elements like spirit points, which are fantastic in that as you do good your spirit points go up; as you pray, your soldiers are more prepared for battle.”

How absolutely boring… I’d stick to my Diablo and Grand Theft Auto and let the rest of the world play Care Bears.

Diablo III ?

Gaming Steve: Rumor: Diablo III On the Way? You Better Believe It!

This rumor, if true, could spell the end of the world as we know it. I might even flunk school because of it. I nearly screwed up Secondary 2 because i spent too much time playing Diablo again and again and again. No force in this world can stop me from playing D3, if it exists. Not even if i get a 10,000 word essay to write. Not even sleep can wrest me away from the Holy Grail.

Which is why i hope that this news is not true.
